Toy

I have been saving and saving and saving and finally, last week I bought my first real-live, grown-up camera.

Belted into the front seat on the way home.

I'll admit, it sat in the box for a few days as I tried to create the perfect moment for unpacking it. I envisioned leisurely hours of reading the manuals and watching the DVDs; arranging and rearranging the lenses and accessories in its little satchel. The reality is that I carved out a half-hour between Little League and karate practice to rip open the boxes, charge the battery and leave the packaging torn and forgotten in the middle of my studio floor. It's still there. I did manage to get the battery charged, the lens clicked in, and the SD card inserted so I could at least start snapping photos in Auto Mode. My fear is that if I start in Auto Mode I will never take the time to read all those manuals and figure out what the heck I'm doing. I did figure out which lens to use for far away, and which lens to use for everything else (my only choices at the moment) and have been packing it around and pointing it at my children (one willing, one reluctant). So, here's what a week of pictures looks like in the hands of a very amateurish amateur. Any photography books or blogs would you recommend?!

The first photo

Wow, you can really see the DUST on things...

Oregon has really weird skies this time of year.

Ron Weasley

Okay, 99% of my photos are of Ron Weasley.

  1. I’m taking a digital photography class now and the book we’re using is called Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Amazon carries it and it’s excellent for people like me who have NO experience with all the knobs and settings. Congrats on your new camera!

  2. Congrats! So exciting to get a dSLR. I read Pioneer Woman of course and digital Photography School. I also took a class at my local community college and it was really helped me graduate from auto mode.

  3. Check out http://www.creativelive.com They have the most amazing classes! If you catch them LIVE they are FREE! They are having a great hot to photograph food class next week! They even have prerecorded beginners classes on your camera that you can watch to get you up to speed. Have fun with your new camera. Can’t wait to see the naughty dog picture that you create!
    Hugs,
